while the original BarCamp has been celebrating its second anniversary this weekend at Socialtext’s offices in Palo Alto (here is a video-interview with some of the founders), Vienna will happily hold its third installment of the unconference-format as early as september 29th/30th. the list of attendance already looks very promising…
if you’re in Vienna or surroundings, lets meet at tomorrows BarCamp Vienna 2007! taking place at WerkzeugH, we’re starting at 10am with two session-tracks + catering + afterparty at 7pm. the attendance - of course - is free, as are the fresh BarCamp-shirts I got from Merchzilla yesterday (kudos for sponsoring go to Super-Fi)… ![]()

Thanks to Helge, the next instalment of Barcamp Vienna is going to be on Sunday, june 10th 2007 @ WerkzeugH! See you there!
Igor Lebovic demos Calorie-Count.com, a weight-tracker/diet-tool (partly) developed in Austria and recently sold to About.com (owned by the New York Times). after being online for three years, Calorie-Count.com attracts 24mio pageviews per month. I didn’t try it out yet, but according to Igor the site features an intelligent recipe-parser, allowing users to enter ingridients in full text. if you’re interested in health-related services, be sure to check out gimme20 as well, a community-emphasizing weight- & workout-tracker.
at Barcamp, Walter Rafelsberger just did a nice demo of Rhizome Navigation, an application framework for building 3D-interfaces for navigating statistical data like web-server logs (similar to Digg’s swarm-feature) or user-attention data. try out the Java-frontend, download the demo or see this analysis of austria’s political parties’ manifestos using Rhizome Navigation.

…just started an hour ago… check flickr for photos tagged barcampvienna and the Wiki for the schedule!

just a quick reminder: Vienna’s very first Barcamp is going to take place in about one week - saturday, sept. 30th., 10am - at the One Smartspace (thx 2 One!). if you’re in town and want to hang out with the geeks, feel free to join us! [Barcamps are ad-hoc (un-)conferences/meetups without static agendas, everyone is welcome to speak]. to get involved, visit the wiki! btw, the whole event will be video-taped and made available online soon after…
“BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.”
essentially, BarCamps are ‘unconferences‘, meaning that all attendees are participating in some active way, i.e. taking a speech, demoing or help others in doing so (”no spectators, only participants”). to this day, almost 50 BarCamps all around the world have taken place, mostly in the fields of technology and new media.
after I did a post on barcamp.org about a possible BarCamp Vienna a month ago, I was finally contacted by Helge today. Helge already had registered barcamp.at and set up a Wiki
looks like something is happening here, so if you’re in the area and want to participate, join the Wiki!
