YouTube + Google Maps / PHPTube 0.1.2

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

YouTube has added Google Maps-based geo-tagging of video-clips a few days ago. however, the geo-information is obviously not used anywhere on the site yet (it even doesn’t appear on the beta-version of the video-page, which is available to all users).

as a side-effect of this update, some commentators noticed that my video upload-API PHPTube has been broken by these changes. todays release 0.1.2 is fixing this issue, so I recommend anyone using PHPTube (and there are a few, according to this query for the included demo-video :) ) to upgrade.

Google My Maps

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Google is further narrowing down the space for niche mapping-mashups like frappr and flagr (and to some extent even more complex apps based on the Maps API, like austrian newcomer Tupalo) by releasing their My Maps feature. My Maps lets anybody create geo-mashups without the need to code, including photo- & video-annotation. sharing of maps is currently read-only, but I guess collaborative editing is the next logical step (click for some of my places).

MapLib: customized Google Maps

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

MapLib is a very nice mashup allowing to view any uploaded bitmap through Google Maps’ AJAX user-interface. customized maps support markers and can be embedded on any website. interestingly, Manfred Wuits (yumyum) demonstrated a very similar technique a month ago at BarCamp Vienna (check the video-feed of his demo).

flickr adds geotagging

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

TechCrunch reports tonights addition of geotagging-features to flickr. using a slick AJAX-interface, photos can be drag&dropped on Yahoo! Maps for adding geo-information. using flickr’s photo-organizer, batches of photos are easily processed in a single step. users can browse their own and public photos by geographic data and generate maps displaying all their photos. geo-features were long awaited and put flickr at par with upcoming photo-sharing sites like zooomr, offering similar features by mashing up Google Maps since quite a time.

update: wow, according to the official FlickrBlog, 1.234.384 pictures where geotagged in the first 24h since the feature has lauched! the post also includes interesting technical details on flickr-geotagging.

Google Maps Flight Sim

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

Google Maps Flight Sim is a flash-based mashup developed by Mark Caswell-Daniels. using the keyboard, players can navigate a small airplane flying over digital maps snatched directly from Google Maps. the nice-looking experience is completed by an onboard-cannon ;) however, there is still room for improvement, as the faq suggests:

I have plans to add a building in a user defined location that you can shoot at, after a number of requests from people who want to shoot up their exgirlfriends house / workplace / etc.
